BEARDED IRIS

Iris classification

BEARDED IRISES ARE SO CALLED BECAUSE OF THE TUFT OF HAIR-LIKE FILAMENTS IN THE THROAT OF THE FLOWER, WHICH DISTINGUISH THEM FROM BEARDLESS IRISES (EXAMPLE SIBERIAN IRISES).

BEARDED IRISES ARE CLASSIFIED INTO 6 GROUPS BASED ON THE SIZE OF BOTH THE FLOWER AND THE HEIGHT OF THE PLANT (less than 20 CM to 100 CM) AND THE FLOWERING PERIOD (March-June).

MINIATURE Dwarf Bearded Irises (MDB) Miniature Dwarf Bearded:
VERY SMALL, UNDER 20 CM IN HEIGHT.
VERY EARLY FLOWERING (RIGHT AFTER CROCUS), THEY FLOWERY BETTER AFTER A PERIOD OF COLD.
GOOD YIELD IN ROCK GARDENS OR RAISED BEDS.

DWARF BARBAT IRIS (SDB) Standard Dwarf Bearded Iris:
HEIGHT BETWEEN 20 AND 41CM.
EARLY FLOWERING AS MDBs BEGIN TO FLOWER.

IRIS MEDIUM BEARDED (IB) Intermediate Bearded:
HEIGHT BETWEEN 41 AND 70 CM.
THE FLOWERING OF THIS CLASS BEGINS WITH THE LATEST DWARF IRISES (SDB) UP TO THE FIRST TALL BEARDED IRISES (TB).
SOME VARIETIES ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL IN LARGE GROUPS.
THEY BLOOM BEFORE THE BORDER-BEARDED IRIS (BB) AND HAVE LARGER FLOWERS AND WITH MORE MODERN CHARACTERISTICS THAN THE MINIATURE TALL-BEARDED IRIS (MTB).

Border Bearded IRIS (BB) Border Bearded:
HEIGHT BETWEEN 41 AND 70 CM.
THEY FLOWER IN THE SAME TIME AS TALL BARBED (TB), BUT THEY HAVE SHORTER STEMS AND SMALLER FLOWERS, MAKING THEM MORE SUITABLE FOR WINDY SITES AND EXPOSURE TO WEATHER.
AS THE NAME SUGGESTS, THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR USING IN BORDERS.
THEY DIFFERENTIATE FROM MINIATURE TALL BEARDED IRISES (MTB) BY THE STYLE OF THE FLOWER, MORE SIMILAR TO MODERN TALL BEARDED IRISES, FOR EXAMPLE SHOWING CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS RUFFLED PETALS.

IRIS MINIATURE TALL BEARDED (MTB) Miniature Tall Bearded:
HEIGHT BETWEEN 41 AND 70 CM.
THEY FLOWER IN THE SAME PERIOD AS THE TALL BEARDED IRISES, BUT THEY DIFFER FROM THE BORDER BEARDED IRISES (BB) IN THE STYLE OF THE FLOWER, BEING MORE SIMILAR TO THE HISTORICAL IRISES, SIMPLE BUT ELEGANT AND DO NOT HAVE THE MORE THEATRAL CHARACTERISTICS PRODUCED BY MODERN HYBRIDING, SUCH AS PETALS RUFFLED.
THEY ARE OFTEN KNOWN AS TABLE IRISES, FOR HAVING GOOD RESISTANCE AS CUT FLOWERS.

TALL BEARDED IRIS (TB- TallBearded):
HEIGHT FROM 70CM AND OVER, OFTEN AROUND 90CM, SOME EVEN MORE.
THEY ARE THE VARIETY THAT PRESENTS MORE COLORS AND PARTICULAR QUALITIES THAN THE OTHER CLASSES.
THE FLOWERING PERIOD RANGES FROM THE END OF APRIL TO THE BEGINNING OF JUNE, WITHIN THIS INTERVAL, THEY ARE CLASSIFIED AS EARLY, MEDIUM OR LATE.
THE DURATION OF FLOWERING DEPENDS ON HOW MANY STEMS DEVELOP AND HOW MANY BUDS, A GOOD NUMBER OF BUDS THAT OPEN IN SUCCESSION CAN EVEN PROLONG FLOWERING UP TO 4 WEEKS.

THE PARTS OF THE IRIS:

RHIZOM:
NOT A ROOT, BUT AN ADAPTED STEM, WHICH SENDS THE ROOTS INTO THE SOIL TO ANCHOR THE PLANT AND PRODUCES BUDS FROM ITS SIDES, FROM WHICH THE LEAVES AND FLOWERING STEMS DEVELOP.
TO DEVELOP FLOWER STEMS, THE RHIZOME NEEDS EXPOSURE TO THE SUN.

CLOTHES:
THE THREE VERTICAL PETALS THAT FORM A CROWN AT THE TOP OF THE FLOWER.

WINGS:
THE THREE PENDING OR HORIZONTAL PETALS THAT FORM THE LOWER PART OF THE FLOWER.

BEARD:
FILAMENTS SIMILAR TO HAIR AT THE BASE OF THE WINGS, THEIR COLOR CAN MATCH THAT OF THE FLOWER OR BE OF DIFFERENT COLORS, GIVING LIFE TO BEAUTIFUL CONTRASTS.
IN SOME IRISES THE BEARD CAN BE VERY DEVELOPED AND TAKE VERY PARTICULAR SHAPES.

TIPS FOR GROWING IRISES:
IRISES ARE NOT DIFFICULT TO GROW, YOU JUST FOLLOW SOME SIMPLE RULES.

FROM THE MOMENT OF DELIVERY:
PLANTING MUST BE CARRIED OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BETTER WITHIN THREE DAYS AND IN ANY WAY WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF ARRIVAL.
IF PLANTING IS NOT POSSIBLE IMMEDIATELY, PUT THEM IN SOIL TO COVER THE ROOTS AND KEEP THEM IN A COOL PLACE.
DO NOT LEAVE THEM PACKED OR IN A VERY HOT PLACE.
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT OLD ROOTS - THESE WILL DIE AND BE REPLACED WITH NEW ROOTS.

THE TERRAIN:
BEARDED IRISES LOVE WELL-DRAINING SOIL, THEY NEED TO BE EXPOSED TO THE SUN FOR AT LEAST HALF A DAY.

SYSTEM:
THE OPTIMAL PLANTING SEASON RANS FROM AUGUST FOR AREAS WITH HARD WINTER, TO SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER FOR THOSE WITH MILD WINTER.

THE DISTANCE BETWEEN PLANTS MUST BE NOT LESS THAN 30 CM FOR TALL AND MEDIUM BEARDIES, AND NOT LESS THAN 20 CM FOR Dwarves.
IF THE SOIL IS OPTIMAL, INITIAL FERTILIZATION CAN BE AVOIDED, OTHERWISE, THE SOIL SHOULD BE FERTILIZED AND PREPARED A CERTAIN ADVANCE WITH RESPECT TO THE TIME OF PLANTING.
AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS, FERTILIZING WITH A LOW NITROGEN CONTENT PRODUCT MAY BE USEFUL.

TREATMENT:
AFTER FLOWERING IT IS ADVISABLE TO CUT THE FLORAL STEMS AT THE BASE, REMOVE THE DRY OR SPOTTED LEAVES, BUT DO NOT CUT THE GREEN LEAVES SO AS NOT TO COMPROMISE THE SUBSEQUENT FLOWERINGS.
SOME VARIETIES CAN REPEAT FLOWERING IN SUMMER OR AUTUMN IF THEY DO WELL WHERE THEY ARE PLACED.
